Muslims came to Togo, and started sharing their beliefs, setting up mosques, and teaching about the Islam religion. From their, they spread to Togo's surrounding countries. The Kotokoli tribe is mentioned, and is discussed as having just over 200,000 non-Muslims. Togo has taken Islam in under its arm, and more and more people are converting. There are over 40 mosques just in the capital, Lome, and two of them are quite large, and yet they still overflow. Togo even joined the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation). Basically, Islam is taking over Togo.
This article talks about how Islam is now a major part of the Togolese culture. I know that everyone converted to Islam by choice, but it seems a little suspicious because of the quickness of the conversion. When someone just walks into a room, and all the sudden everyone believes every word that comes out of their mouth, you have to question if that person is very reliable or not. I just feel that maybe some Togolese people might have been forced to become Muslim.
This article discussed the quick change in the Togolese culture for a religious aspect. How all of the sudden, some Islamic people come over, and soon enough, everyone follows them. This probably had an effect on the Togolese culture, in customs, obviously religion, and the physical appearance of the Togolese.
