Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad al-Thani, the biggest spender and the most powerful person in art, is the one who spent $142.4 million on a three part set by Francis Bacon. The piece, "The Three Studies of Lucian Freud", is a painting of Francis' good friend, and was sold at a world record auction price in New York at the "Christie's" auction. Sheikha, being part of the royal family, eventually spends over one billion dollars on art every year. But, being the big spender that she is, Sheikha had all but exceeded that record last year, buying "The Card Players" by Paul Cézanne. The price paid for "The Three Studies" passed only the $120 million paid for Edvard Munch's "The Scream".
This article makes me think about how there are people out there that have way too much money. Then, it frustrates me to think about how they're spending it on blotches of color on animal skin. Even so, I understand the joy of having a really meaningful work of art, but don't spend a fortune on it. Over a billion dollars a year is a little much.
This article discusses the economic advance that citizens and political leaders of Qatar are in. They have so much more money than everyone else, that they get to spend it on things like art. I wonder what it's like in Qatar. To stay in one of those hotels. I wonder if it feels normal for someone that has that kind of money. I wonder how the money corresponds with the culture of people in Qatar.
